Prompt: Washi Tape

Happy Monday! (or is that an oxymoron?)

This week I'm bringing you a supply-based prompt. One of my favorite supplies to play with at my art table is washi tape, and I wanted to see how this would translate to digi.

As usual, Lita has blown me away with her page. Don't you just love the way she covered the entire background with washi tape and then used additional pieces on top to accentuate her design?

supplies: washi tape, Caran Dache Necolor crayons, Donna Downey Empowered Words stamps,
typewriter roller stamp, Pilot permaball pen, flower stencil

I have to say that even though this prompt was my brain-child, I had a really hard time creating a digital page that used washi tape as it's main focus. My page went through several evolutions and many hours of adding and deleting items before I came close to even being remotely satisfied. I finally ended up pulling many pieces of washi tape from all over my hard drive (please excuse the massive credits list below) to make a large stitched mat in the center of my page. You can find the inspiration for my journaling here.

Tapes pulled from the following kits and element packs:
Parcel 33 by Studio Tangie;  Tangible Plans by Studio Tangie;
Apple of My Eye by Jenn Barrette & Micheline Martin; Stickies by Studio 68;
20 Questions by Jenn Barrette & Lauren Grier & Shawna Clingerman;
2012 Art Journal Caravan Member Kit by Studio Tangie;
Art & Soul Washi Tape by Tracie Stroud; Parcel 06 - Definitions by Tangie Baxter;
Digital Art Journal Class Kit by Jessica Sprague & Nancie Rowe Janitz; Good Feeling by Shawna Clingerman;

Other Supplies:
Parcel 3 - Rubon Overlays by Tangie Baxter; Stamped Roughed Edges No 1 by Katie Pertiet;
Parcel 33 by Studio Tangie; Celeste | Stamps by Captivated Visions; Keep Calm and Splatter On by Michelle Godin;
Parcel 30 - Gesso Textures by Tangie Baxter; Mist and Paint by Kaye Winiecki; Captivating 2012 | August by Captivated Visions; Bad Sewing Machine: Gridlocked by Traci Reed;
Journal Your Art Out 3 by Nancie Row Janitz & Fiddlette Designs;   Burnt Thistles Mini by Sissy Sparrows;
Fonts: junko-typewriter, ProblemSecretary

We'll see you back here in a couple of weeks with a new prompt...I wonder what Lita will think up for us? In the meantime, now matter whether you play with paper or go digi, use some washi tape on your next page and link us up in the comments so we can see Art Squared inspiration at work.

Prompt: Confidence

Hello again, Melita here bringing you our newest prompt!

Art Squared Prompt: Confidence

This weeks prompt is courtesy of yours truly. I’ve been trying to step outside my comfort zone more than I normally would, but my confidence has taken a bit of a beating recently. I really want/need to boost my confidence back up again, but must admit it’s not been easy. So, what better subject for this weeks prompt, right?

Here’s Jaimie’s stunning creation, as always

I chose a canvas again this week – this was a message I wanted to keep in sight, so a canvas to hang in my studio was the perfect solution.

Supplies: 8x8 deep edge canvas, vintage sheet mysic and book text, Crate Paper Portrait collection, Liquitex modelling paste, Vintage doily as stencil, Kaisercraft acrylic paint, Distress ink, rubber stamps, Archival ink, Kaisercraft flowers, Thickers

Prompt 5: Maps

After weeks of no creative mojo whatsoever, I am finally able to bring you Prompt #5! Woot! Jaimie chose the prompt this time around, and I’m not gonna lie, I struggled. I actually completed a couple of journal spreads, but ended up obscuring the maps almost completely lol What can I say, I like to layer!

Art Squared - Prompt 5: Maps

As usual, Jaimie has outdone herself with her digi goodness. I love her blending here, the restrained use of embellishments, and of course that quote. So perfect!

For my interpretation, I decided to go with a canvas, and a quote that I really need to keep in sight. I had a lot of fun with this, it felt good to really create again. If you’d like to see step by step pics of it’s creation, be sure to head over to my blog HERE.

Prompt 4: Change

Hello out there! We're a little late bringing you the next prompt, but I have to admit that it's all my fault. But know that we're trying to get our momentum here, and we'll get there eventually.

Lita chose the prompt "change" for this post and I knew right away what I wanted to create. But first, let me show you her entire page. You've seen a sneak peek, but you really need to take in the whole thing to see how beautiful it is. I LOVE the colors she used and that she included a photo. And would you look at the the stitching! - it just add that little extra something. The quote...well, it speaks volumes about the journey of life we're all on, doesn't it?

supplies: vintage dictionary text, paper doily, black cotton, hambly transparency
gesso, adirondack colour wash spray - lettuce, sei tumble tie dye spray - yellow, grass green, turqoise, flowers - prima, kaisercraft, vintage flash card, kaisercraft alpha stickers, string

I've seen the quote, "without change there would be no butterfly" before and it's always stuck with me. That a beautiful butterfly evolves from something as icky as a catepillar is simply amazing to me. It kind of goes along with the quote that Lita used above doesn't it? The butterfly is nowhere near what it once was.

supplies: Fleur de Jardin by Jenn Barrette, Krystal Hartley, Mari Koegelenberg, Heather Roselli; Renewed Spirit by Agnes Biro & Yellow Butterfly; Grunged Edges by Jen Wilson Designs; Doily Print Brushes by Just Jaimee; Gesso Messy 03 by Tangie Baxter; English Rose by Captivated Visions; Fingerpaint Frenzy by CD Muckosky; A Way of Life Overlays by Captivated Visions; Newspapers by Tangie Baxter; Messy Paints by Amy Martin; Get Creative Paint by Nancie Rowe Janitz;

I hope you've enjoyed our pages for this prompt and that if you choose to play, you'll come back and link us up to your page in the comments. Until then, happy art journaling…whether your'e getting messy with paint and glue, or going digi like me.

xoxo

Quick, while Jaimie's not looking...

Apologies for the lack of posts around here lately - I've had creative block and was holding things up :/
It's Jaimie's turn to post this next prompt, but while she's not looking (ie sleeping hehehe) I thought I'd pop in and post a quick little sneak at my creation for it. She should be posting the prompt soon, but for now, take a peek!

Happy arting!

Prompt #3 - Letter to a Younger You

Lita here with this weeks prompt (can we just pretend it's Monday and that I posted this on time? Please?) Jaimie is the mastermind behind this prompt and whoa, it was a doozie for me!

I absolutely love Jaimie's creation this week. Her journaling hit home to me and of course, the way she has showcased it on the page is just gorgeous - I love her colour choices!

* Don't forget, click on the pics for a closer look *

As always, I've pulled out the paints for my spread, and enjoyed every mess filled moment! There are so many layers to this one, and so many supplies used...THAT part I loved, but man, the journaling was hard for me this week. My younger self would really have benefited from what I know now lol
Do me a favour and pretend you can't see the pencil lines that I still need to erase...k?

Supplies:
Liquitex gesso, Ranger paint dabbers in Butterscotch & Pool, Jenni Bowlin dabber in Seed Packet, Jenni Bowlin butterfly stamp, Heidii Swapp circle stamps, punchinella, book text, Crafters Workshop poppies stencils, Pilot Permaball, Faber Castell Big Brush india ink pen.

I hope our creations this week have given you a creative boost and prompted you to write a letter to your younger self. We'd love for you to play along, so be sure to link us up in the comments if you do!

Happy arting!

Prompt #2 - Tags

Hello out there! Jaimie here and I'm so excited to be writing my first post for the Art Squared blog. The wonderful Lita has chosen a fun prompt for us this week - come join us as we play with tags!!!

My draw absolutely dropped when I opened my email and saw the page Lita created for this prompt. Her use of collage techniques to build this page gives the eye so much to see. How about that lucky number 13? :) I love that Lita included it with her message about life as a gamble and making your own luck.

Miss Thang didn't give me a list of supplies, so if you're curious about anything on the page just let me know and I'll give you her personal cell number so you can call her at all hours of the night. haha Of course, if you called Lita in the middle of the night, you'd probably catching her working on a page for NEXT week's prompt already.

Now, y'all know I work digitally most of the time. I considered tackling this page in my actual art journal, but I'm really struggling with my personal style lately so I spent a few hours (yes, hours) in Photoshop instead. I wanted to use tags as journal spots to capture what's going on in my life right now.

I'm so glad I use ACDSee to organize and "tag" (hehe get it?) my digital files and Anna's Credit Tracker for posting page credits, because I pulled morsels for this page from all over the place. I won't bother you with the details here, but my Flickr page has all the details if you need them.

Lita and I hope you can take a little tag inspiration from us to use in your journals this week. Please link us up to your blog or gallery to show us what you're creating, and we'll see you back here next week's prompt.

Prompt #1–Lyrics

Hi guys, and welcome to the first Art Squared prompt from myself and Jaimie! This week, we’d like to challenge you to create an art journal page using song lyrics as your inspiration.

june11PROMPT

This is such a versatile prompt – journal about what you’re currently listening to, a song that has special meaning, lyrics that speak to you, or even journal about the music that gets you up and dancing!

Each week, Jaimie and I will share our interpretation of the challenge, and hopefully inspire you to play along. Jaimie’s 100% digital creation has absolutely blown me away. The colour, the design and most of all the message, are just amazing! It’s pages like these that make me itch to try my hand at digital art journalling!
